On September 30, 2024, the Hermandad Mexicana Nacional convened a significant Bipartisan Summit in the heart of Mexico City, bringing together an influential delegation of community leaders, union representatives, and political figures from California. Angelina Corona, CEO of Hermandad Mexicana Nacional, opened the summit by expressing heartfelt gratitude to the participants for their dedication to empowering Mexican and United States citizens, especially in light of the critical voter registration efforts ahead of the upcoming elections.
In her opening remarks, Corona emphasized the summit's importance, highlighting Claudia Sheinbaum's inauguration as a pivotal moment in Mexican history. "The inauguration of Claudia Sheinbaum sends a message to women everywhere that we will not be confined to traditional roles," she remarked. "This serves as an example for future generations, and we hope to see more leaders like Claudia Sheinbaum in Mexico, just as we have in the United States." Sheinbaum’s election is viewed as a continuation of the transformative vision laid out by former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, known as the Fourth Transformation, which seeks to reform Mexico’s political, economic, and social landscape.
Former California Senator and Chair of the California Latino Legislative Caucus Benjamin Hueso, a prominent figure at the summit, challenged attendees to reflect on their roles in this historical moment. "We want to develop an economic force that is culturally and socially distinctive," he urged. We aim to create a future that resonates with our unique identity."
The summit featured a notable address from Dr. Juan de Dios Vazquez Alvarez, Mexico's Former Minister of Customs and International Trade. Dr. Vazquez Alvarez provided insights into the administration's commitment to redefining Mexican identity to better serve the 95% of the population that has long been marginalized. "One of the great goals of the AMLO administration is to ensure that 95% of our population has a voice and can actively participate in society," underscoring the importance of civic engagement and representation.
Dr. Vazquez Alvarez also emphasized the significance of the California delegation as a representation of "Greater Mexico." He asserted that the summit was not merely a meeting of two distinct nations but a celebration of shared heritage and collective potential. "We are creating a Hermandad—a unified social and economic force that bridges our two countries," he said. "While Claudia looks northward, it is essential to understand how alliances can be forged with Mexicans living in the United States."
The discussions highlighted the vital connections between the U.S. and Mexico, particularly among U.S.-born children of Mexican descent. Participants expressed their desire to cultivate relationships, empowering California to act as an extension of Mexico's global influence. “The myth of the 'sleeping giant' must be dispelled.” as the great Bert Corona would say. The time to awaken and seize opportunities is now. Our ability to hold dual citizenship represents the future of the American dream—one that fosters friendships, and businesses and expands connections.
As the summit concluded, attendees departed with a renewed sense of purpose, committed to working collaboratively to create a more inclusive and equitable future for Mexico and its diaspora in the United States. The Hermandad Mexicana Nacional's Bipartisan Summit not only honored President Claudia Sheinbaum's historic election but also set the stage for meaningful dialogue and action in the years to come. On October 1st, the delegation had the honor to view the historic moment when President Claudia Sheinbaum gave her first speech since becoming president of Mexico. She outlined 100 points of her presidency that would mark her legacy.
